Synopsis

Ruohong was adopted by her aunt, Aunt Cui, and grew up with Aunt Cui's biological daughter, Ruoying, like sisters. At a matchmaking event for Ruoying, Aunt Cui scorned the talented Zhang Tong for his humble origins. She betrothed her daughter to him but then reneged, favoring Zhang Tong's wealthy and influential older friend, Zheng Que. The sisters devised a clever plan to switch places, with Ruohong taking Ruoying's place at the arranged meeting set by Aunt Cui.

Ruohong and Zheng Que, one standing in for her sister to reject the marriage proposal, the other speaking on behalf of his brother Zhang Tong, resemble the maid Hongniang and the White Horse General Du Que from the original "Romance of the West Chamber." They selflessly facilitate the union between the lady Yingying and the scholar Zhang Sheng. But who will bring Ruohong and Zheng Que together? As feelings develop between Ruohong and Zheng Que, Ruohong decides to arrange a match for herself. Meanwhile, with Ruohong's encouragement, Ruoying resolves to break free from her family's constraints and unite with Zhang Tong, her true love. How will the fates of these two couples conclude in this contemporary retelling of "The West Chamber”?
